According to a recent study by PwC1, Austrian industrial companies are expected to invest around 4% of their turnover into Industry 4.0 solutions by 2020. These solutions are expected to be broadly applied among the Austrian companies, particularly those solutions that increase the control of value chains within and across companies, as their introduction could lead to important productivity gains. Yet, digitalisation is also increasing uncertainty. For example, it is less clear how Austrian companies (particularly SMEs) are going to finance digitalisation or whether the effectiveness of the current employees’ qualification and skills for an increasing level of digitalisation.
