Using technology to save the world’s bees

CONTRIBUTORS

DESCRIPTION

Bees play a crucial role in global agricultural production; their pollination helps produce a third of the food humans eat and yet bee colonies are in crisis. In North America alone, there are more than 700 types of bees heading for extinction. The declining bee population is a threat to us all as their survival is a crucial part of the fight against world hunger. To tackle this issue, technologists, farmers, scientists and government groups around the globe are working to protect bees and create solutions to safeguard their future. Some of these solutions include monitoring beehives from the inside to collect data that will help design innovative solutions to help them survive, smart-sensor technology ‘backpacks’ on the bees themselves to identify patterns and behaviour, and even the development of robotic bees to assist in the pollination process
