Dubai Industrial City: Where Industrialisation meets Innovation

Dubai Industrial City was established in 2004 and is one of the region’s largest global manufacturing & industrialisation revolutions and logistics hubs. It is a strategic driver of economic growth and diversification that is home to more than 750 companies and hundreds of factories producing everything from cement and chemicals to food and electric car parts.

Strategically located nearby the Al Maktoum International Airport and Jebel Ali Port, the business district allows companies to reach two-thirds of the world’s population in eight hours. Spanning an area of more than 550 million square feet, Dubai Industrial City is built around a world-class masterplan divided into sector-specific zones for different industrial activities and serves the global technology and manufacturing community strategically. These include food and beverages, logistics, base metals, transport and equipment, machinery and equipment, minerals, chemicals, and general industry which led to global manufacturing innovations. What this masterplan has done is create an integrated supply chain, a symbiotic ecosystem that represents every step in the supply chain from raw materials to finished products.

 

It has attracted local and global companies such as Unilever, Patchi, Asmak, Al Futtaim Logistics and Standard Carpets to the business hub. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, industrial and commercial land, retail showrooms, office buildings, warehousing and logistics solutions, open storage yards, and worker accommodation, Dubai Industrial City has continued to strengthen Dubai’s knowledge and innovation-based economy which in turn attract worldwide manufacturing & Industrialisation industry speakers.

 

The sprawling industrial city features a 105km road network with a 10km dual carriageway spine road, four 132 KVA substations, a fibre optic cable network, and a robust storm water drainage system.

 

It plays a prominent role in unlocking the potential of innovation-driven food security, with more than 60 food and beverage manufacturers present, including Barakat and Lifco. There are also 12 food production factories under construction in line with the UAE’s ongoing commitment to attract investment and global manufacturing innovations in this space.

 

There have been some big announcements too. Al Barakah Dates recently confirmed plans to build the world’s largest privately-owned date factory in Dubai Industrial City. The solar-powered complex will cover 600,000 sq. ft and process more than 100,000 tonnes of dates and date products annually. Meanwhile, International Holding Company subsidiary Asmak recently inaugurated a AED 200 million fish factory that will process more than 40,000 tonnes of seafood per year and supply companies such as Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket and Kibsons.

 

To provide seamless mobility and ease of doing business industrial exhibitions & webinars are organized. It attracts manufacturing & Industrialisation industry speakers to share their innovative ideas on the industrial revolution. Infrastructure projects worth AED 410 million were completed in 2020. It included two highway extensions to Emirates Road and a worker accommodation village. The infrastructure project provides heavy-tow trucks with direct access to Emirates Road, which links Abu Dhabi with the Northern Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia. The 14,000-bed worker accommodation features well-equipped, low-rise buildings comprising living quarters, dining areas, leisure facilities and other amenities. There are now around 56,000 beds in total, with the complex offering football and basketball courts, supermarkets, restaurants and other facilities for residents to enjoy.

 

As per global industry news, more than AED 5.3 billion has been invested into infrastructure improvements, digital transformation, automation and renewable energy since Dubai Industrial City was established. A further AED 8.4 billion in indirect investment has also been attracted since the business hub was established. It has helped to create a vibrant global technology and manufacturing community, supported by amenities such as the Sapphire Mall which offers a wide range of retail and F&B.
